A DAY ON THE PLANTATION

What the day actually looks like

Six hours, most of it walking and eating. Nothing is rushed.

09:00

Collected from Ponda

Pickup from Ponda town, or your stay if it is within eight kilometres. One minibus, twelve people maximum.

10:30

Barefoot through the vines

Pepper, nutmeg, cardamom and vanilla, growing where they actually grow. You will be asked to smell a great many things.

13:00

Lunch, on a banana leaf

A Goan vegetarian thali cooked on site. Second helpings are the norm here, not an upsell.

15:00

The still, then back

The cashew feni still, a tasting if you want one, and back in Ponda by half four.

THREE-DAY SPICE TRAIL

If you have longer than a day

The same ground, taken slowly, with two nights inland.

Day One

Ponda plantations

Two working plantations, lunch on the second, and the feni still before dusk.

Day Two

Netravali and the falls

Inland to the bubbling lake and Savari falls. Long walk, good swim, packed lunch.

Day Three

Market, then the coast

Mapusa market at opening, spice buying with someone who knows, then dropped at your beach.

WHEN TO COME

The spice calendar

Four windows, described as they actually are rather than as a brochure would have it.

Nov – Feb

Peak — dry and cool

The obvious window. Book the plantation a week ahead; the roads are busy by nine.

Mar – May

Hot, and far quieter

Thirty-four degrees by noon. Go early, and the place is nearly yours.

Jun – Sep

Monsoon — green and wet

Everything is loud and growing. Tours still run; bring a second pair of shoes.

October

Harvest begins

The best month to actually see picking, and the shoulder price still applies.

AT A GLANCE

Three seasons, honestly described

If you only read one thing before booking, read this.

PEAK

November – February

Dry, cool and genuinely busy. Everything is open and nothing is cheap.

SHOULDER

March – May, October

Hot or damp at the edges, but the plantations are calm and the rates drop.

QUIET

June – September

Monsoon. Fewer tours, greener than any photograph, and the lowest prices of the year.
