The house behind the salon

Robes and a quiet room, with nobody moving you along.

Solace & Steam began in 2014 as a single treatment room at the back of a Woolloongabba hair studio.

A converted brick building off a laneway most people need to be told about once.

Around the studio

Small rooms, kept simple.

Photographed as they are.

The quiet room: an armchair, a folded robe and a pot of tea by the window

Every visit

Free before and after any treatment over an hour.

Folded robes and slippers on a timber shelf

On arrival

Robes and slippers, laundered here rather than hired in.

In the chair

Colour prep, sectioned rather than rushed.

The hair studio

$90from, includes GST

Cut, colour and finish, timed as generously as the rooms.

Fifteen minutes of slack in every booking, so a full colour is never rushed.

The rooms came first. The salon grew around them.

Nobody here is paid on commission, hair or treatments.

House rules

Four things we keep to.

Not rules for you. Rules for us.

  1. 01

    Quiet is the default

Conversation if you want it, silence if you do not.

  2. 02

    No upselling, ever

Nobody here works on commission. If a treatment is not right, we will say so.

  3. 03

    Time is generous

Fifteen minutes of slack in every appointment, so you are never hurried out.

  4. 04

A note, if you want it

What we did and what to do at home, written down.

Left after a visit (sample reviews)

I went in for a cut and ended up in the quiet room with a pot of tea because my next chair wasn’t free. Nobody rushed me back out.

The three-hour visit is not an easy thing to book off work for, but it is exactly what it says: hair, one treatment, lunch, and nobody checking the clock.
