Botanic Balm

The ingredient list

What’s in your colour.

Every product we use is on a published list: on the wall by the door, on this site, and printed for you at consultation. You can read it before you book, not just after.

Your first colour appointment

What actually happens, and what is in it.

Plain answers to the four questions people ask us most about the colour itself.

1

What is in the colour

An ammonia-free permanent base with a monoethanolamine alkaliser, plus the specific pigment mixed for your formula.

2

Where the list lives

On the wall by the door, on the site, and printed for you at consultation. Updated whenever a product changes.

3

What replaces PPD

Nothing we mix contains PPD. Most PPD-free colour uses a related dye (PTD) instead, and some people react to that too, so it needs the same patch test.

4

The patch test, every time

Forty-eight hours ahead, five minutes, free. We will not waive it, whichever system your colour uses.

Nothing we mix contains PPD. Some people still react, so we test every time.

The numbers

How this list is kept.

Operating facts about the shelf and the patch test, not claims about how your own colour will turn out. No salon can promise you a result.

  • 41products on the published list, all in use
  • 0products on that list containing ammonia or PPD
  • 48 hrsnotice for a patch test before a first colour
  • 5 minwhat a patch test actually takes

Before your first colour

Why the patch test is never optional.

PPD-free colour can still cause a reaction. Every first colour, and every returning client, is patch tested.

  • 1A reaction can develop even if you have been coloured here before without one.
  • 2The dye that replaces PPD can cause a reaction of its own, so it needs testing too.
  • 3Skin sensitivity changes with medication, pregnancy and time.
  • 4A patch test from another salon does not carry across to us.
  • 5A patch test takes five minutes and is free, so there is no reason to skip it.
  • 6We will not colour without one, even if you are in a hurry.
