    What we build

Three ways to make a Brisbane backyard usable

    Hardwood decks

Spotted gum, blackbutt or merbau over a hardwood or steel frame. Built high off the ground on a sloping block, or low and wide off a slab.

    Pergolas

Open-batten shade over a deck, courtyard or poolside. Oriented and spaced for the sun angles your yard actually gets, which is the whole trick.

    Covered outdoor rooms

Insulated roof panel or Colorbond over a full deck, with fans, lighting and power. This is the one that turns into the room you use most.
    Why Blackbutt

Most deck problems in this city are drainage problems.

Brisbane gets 1,100mm of rain, most of it in a handful of storms, and the humidity does the rest. A deck that traps water against the house or has no airflow under it will rot from below no matter how good the timber was. That’s what we design around first.
Ventilation and fall, designed in Airflow under the frame, a gap at the house, and boards laid so water runs off rather than sitting in the joint. It’s invisible and it’s why a deck lasts thirty years instead of twelve.
Engineered and certified, always Footing sizes from a real engineer for your soil class and wind rating. Anything over a metre high or attached to the house legally needs it — and it’s the first thing a buyer’s inspector looks for.
We do the council paperwork Plans, engineering, private certifier and final inspection — all in the quoted price. You don’t lodge anything or chase anyone.
One carpentry crew, start to finish The same two or three faces for the whole build. Our electrician and roofer are the only other trades on site, and we’ve used both for years.

From first visit to first barbecue

    Design visit

Free, about an hour. We measure, check the ground and boundaries, and sketch options with rough costs while we’re there.

    Drawings & fixed quote

Within a week: a plan and elevation, timber and finish selections, and one fixed price with approvals inside it.

    Engineering & approval

Three to six weeks, mostly waiting. We lodge with a private certifier, which is faster than council, and keep you posted.

    Build

Two to five weeks on site depending on size and height. Footings, frame, deck, then cover, electrical and finishes.

    Certify & hand over

Final inspection, certificate issued, and we show you how to oil it and when. Site left clean.

    What clients say

“Our block falls away steeply and two builders said they’d need to drop the deck a metre. Blackbutt engineered it level with the kitchen floor, and now the whole back of the house opens onto it.”
    Dave M.
    CAMP HILL
“They talked us out of the bigger pergola we asked for and into an insulated roof over half of it. Completely right — we use it in the rain now, and it cost less than the original plan.”
    Priya N.
    ASHGROVE
“Our old deck had rotted where it met the house. They found the cause was a blocked gutter, sorted that first, then rebuilt. Anyone else would have just replaced the boards.”
    Ken R.
    THE GAP
    Where we build

Brisbane, bayside and the western suburbs

We keep the radius tight so one crew is on your site every day of the build rather than splitting between jobs across the south-east.

Book a design visit before spring

Approvals take three to six weeks, so a deck you want for Christmas needs starting now.
