Shade in summer, shelter in a storm

Four ways to cover an outdoor space, from open battens to a fully insulated roof. The right one depends on which months you want to use it.

Open batten pergola

Timber battens on a timber frame. Filters the sun, keeps airflow, and lets you grow something over it. Doesn’t keep rain off — that’s the trade.

Polycarbonate or Colorbond patio

The practical middle ground. Keeps rain off, goes up quickly, costs less than an insulated roof. Noisy in heavy rain, and a single-skin metal roof radiates real heat in February.

Insulated roof outdoor room

Our most-built project, and the one clients say changed how they use the house. Insulated sandwich panel means it stays cool underneath and rain is a murmur rather than a roar. Flat ceiling, so fans and lights recess into it.

Louvred opening roof

Motorised aluminium blades that tilt for shade and close to seal out rain. Expensive, and for a Brisbane courtyard where you want winter sun and summer shade from the same structure, nothing else does both.
