THISTLEWOOD, SINCE 1886

A proper pub, still doing it properly.

Real ale, a kitchen that closes when it says it will, and a fire that’s been lit every winter night for two hundred years.

THE BUILDING

Licensed in 1886, and the fire has never gone out.

The Thistlewood has been a pub for well over a century, on the same plot next to the church, through several landlords and at least one rebuild after a chimney fire in the 1920s. The fireplace itself survived that fire and has been lit every winter night since anyone currently working here can remember.

None of that is a gimmick. It’s just what happens when a building stays a pub for well over a century. The beams are original, the cellar is the original cellar, and the kitchen closing on time is a rule that predates the current staff by decades.
