BENCH JOINERY, EST. 1981

Hardwood, cut once, made to outlast us.

A workshop of five making staircases, windows and fitted furniture in oak, ash and walnut. Everything is drawn before it is cut.

ROCKLEA WORKSHOP, THREE GENERATIONS

The bench has had three Marchants at it.

The workshop was set up in 1981 by the current owner’s grandfather, on the same Rocklea industrial estate it still occupies. Five joiners work there now, all time-served, and the firm has stayed a bench shop rather than moving into a factory unit with a spray line and a catalogue.

That means every staircase and every window still gets drawn by hand before a single piece of oak or ash is cut, the way it always has. It is slower than buying components in from a factory, and it is the reason the guarantee runs to ten years rather than one.

WHAT WE MAKE

Three things, in solid timber.

We are a bench shop. If it can be made in a factory, we are the wrong people.

Staircases

Cut string, closed string and curved. Drawn, dry-assembled in the workshop, then fitted in a day or two.

Windows and doors

Sash, casement and entrance doors in accoya, oak or sapele. Made to the opening, not to a standard size.

Fitted furniture

Bookcases, wardrobes and kitchens in solid hardwood, scribed to walls that are never straight.

HOW IT WORKS

What happens next

01

A visit and a drawing

We measure ourselves and draw it before quoting. The drawing is yours whether you proceed or not.

02

Made on the bench

Six to ten weeks, depending on the timber. You are welcome in the workshop to see it.

03

Fitted and finished

Our own fitters. We take the old one away and leave the place swept.

THE WORKSHOP

Five people and a lot of shavings.

Forty-three years on the same Rocklea industrial estate, three generations in.
