Who Restored This Fort, and Why We Wrote It Down

A conservation trust took on the ruin in 2008 and spent four years on it before the museum wing opened in 2012 — we’ve documented the whole project.

Why We Built This

Most visitors spend twenty minutes here and leave without knowing the fort was a prison for half a century. We wanted a record that filled that gap properly.

What We Check

Every Date on This Site Is Sourced

Each date on the timeline is cross-checked against at least two archival records before it goes on the site — we’ve corrected three plaques so far.

Where the Records Live

“The photographs from the 1990s show goats on the ramparts — we kept two of them on the site specifically so people don’t forget.”

Ready to Go?

The museum wing is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30am to 5:30pm, last entry at 5pm.
