The Marchmont pantry box

Six jars, made in one kitchen, in batches of about ninety. When a batch is gone it is gone until the fruit comes round again.

What is in it

Two jams, two marmalades and two chutneys, chosen by what was worth picking that month rather than by a fixed list.

How it is made

Open pan, small batch, no pectin and no concentrate. It is slower and it is the whole reason the set is worth eating.

How it arrives

Straw-lined, taped, and posted on a Tuesday. Add a note at checkout and it is written by hand, not printed.

Ninety boxes a batch

It is not scarcity marketing, it is the size of the pan

One person, one range, one afternoon per variety. We could make more of it by making it differently, and then it would be a different thing.

One box, one price

£38

six jars, posted, including the note

What that covers

Six full-size jars
340g each, not a taster size

Enough that you can actually cook with one rather than ration it.

Postage included

UK mainland, tracked, packed to survive a letterbox that was not designed for glass.

A handwritten note

If you are sending it on. Leave it blank and we leave it out.

Replaced if it breaks

Send a photograph, we post another. No form, no returns label.

Two ways to buy it

Once

A single box

£38

One box, once. Most people start here and quite a lot of people stay here, which is fine.

Seasonally

Four boxes a year

£136 for the year — one box each season, posted when the batch is made. Cancel before any box ships and you are charged for what has already arrived, nothing else.

Two things people ask

Both about the same thing, really

How long does an open jar keep?

Four to six weeks in the fridge. There is no preservative in it beyond sugar and the fruit itself, which is the trade for how it tastes.

Can I choose what is in the box?

No. The box is what the batch was, and a pick-your-own version would mean holding stock of everything, which means making it differently.

Before you decide

What the box is and is not

Worth knowing either way, and it will not suit everyone.

It is seasonal, genuinely

There is no marmalade in August. If you want a fixed list all year, this is the wrong box.

It is sweet

Preserves are. We have not reduced the sugar to make a health claim we would then have to defend.

It travels well

Straw, tape and a box that has been through the post enough times for us to have stopped worrying about it.

It runs out

Ninety a batch. When they are gone the page says so rather than taking the order anyway.

The list is the only way to know a batch has opened.

One last one

Is there a shop I can just buy from?

Not between batches, no — and a permanently open shop with nothing in it is worse than a closed one.

So the list is the shop

It opens for about four days each time and then it closes.

Two emails a season. Nothing between them.
