Six sessions, four stages

Fortnightly is the usual rhythm. Weekly if something is urgent, monthly if you need thinking time between.

Sessions one and two

Getting properly specific about what is actually wrong, which is almost never what you arrived saying.

Session three

Widening the options. Most people arrive with two and leave this session with six, several of them cheap to test.

Sessions four and five

Running small experiments in your real life and looking honestly at what came back. This is where the work happens.

Session six

Deciding, planning and closing. You leave with something written down and no expectation of coming back.

Three things worth knowing before you spend money

Coaching is unregulated, which puts the burden of judgment on you. Here is what I would want to know.

Coaching is not therapy

They are different disciplines with different training and different aims. Coaching assumes you are functioning and wants to know what you will do next. If you are struggling to function, therapy is the right call and a good coach will tell you so in the first session rather than the sixth.

Anyone can call themselves a coach

There is no protected title and no licence to lose. So ask any coach you are considering: what training, which accrediting body, and do you have regular supervision. Those three answers separate a profession from a website, and you are entitled to all of them before you pay anything.

Results are not guaranteed and cannot be

I can offer better thinking, a plan you believe in and someone to be accountable to. I cannot promise a promotion, a career change or a particular outcome, and neither can anyone else — a guarantee in this field is a marketing device, not a commitment.

How is this different from talking to a friend?

A friend has a stake in your decision and a view about what you should do. I have neither, and I am trained to ask the question you have been steering around for a year. The structure and the absence of an agenda are most of the value.

What if I do not know what I want?

That is the usual starting point and it is a perfectly good one. Sessions one and two exist precisely because almost nobody arrives able to name the actual problem. If you could, you would probably have solved it already.

Will my employer find out?

Not from me. If your employer is paying, we agree in advance exactly what they will and will not be told — usually that sessions happened and nothing about their content. That agreement is written down before we start.

Can we do it online?

Yes, and most clients do. Video works well for coaching and means we are not limited by geography or a commute. Some people prefer walking sessions or in person, and both are available.

What if it is not working?

Say so, and we will either change how we are working or stop. You can end a block at any point and I will refund the sessions you have not used. Coaching that is not landing is not worth either of our time.
