It feels like wading through wet concrete, and the voice in your head that has been counting strokes all race starts asking a much simpler question: why.<\/p><p>Nobody warns you about this part in training. You do thousands of strokes at low rate, hundreds at race pace, and maybe a dozen, ever, at the pace where your technique actually starts to fail. So when it happens in the one race that counts, most crews meet it for the first time with the finish line already in sight.<\/p><p>I didn&rsquo;t win by being stronger than the boat next to us. I won because somewhere in years of unglamorous mornings, my body had already decided what to do when my mind stopped being useful.
